New Faculty Join the Center for Applied Mathematics

Zhiqiang Cai joined the faculty this fall as Associate Professor of Mathematics. After receiving a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in 1990, Cai held postdoctoral positions at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Courant Institute. In 1991 he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Southern California. Cai's research focuses on the numerical solution of partial differential equations, including discretization and solution methods, and computational fluid dynamics.

Zhilan Feng, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, received her Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Arizona State University in 1994. Following her graduation, she spent three years as a postdoctoral associate in the biometrics unit at Cornell University, where she used differential equations to study mathematical models for infectious disease such as tuberculosis and dengue fever. This past June, Feng was an invited speaker at the U.S.-Chinese Conference on Recent Developments in Differential Equations and Applications held in Hangzhou, PRC.
