News from Student Clubs

The Math Education Club is the newest education club on campus. It was formed because we saw a need to increase communication between the Schools of Science and Education.

We undertook many activities during our first semester of existence. We offered high school students more tutoring hours, enabling them to gain valuable math experience and allowing us to become acquainted with math teachers. We took a group to a meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and we invited speakers to give us some important and useful information on team teaching, portfolios, resumes, and interviewing. We also passed along from the School of Education important information pertaining to test dates, deadlines, and scholarships.

The Mathematics Club had an exciting and successful year. The highlight of the fall semester was our "Fractal Fest." The fest began with a viewing of the video "The Complexity and Beauty of the Mandelbrot Set." We then adjourned to the computer lab where participants were able to create their own fractals.

This year also saw the inauguration of a series of "brown-bag" faculty luncheons. Several faculty members ate lunch in the math library lounge. Club members were invited to drop in. The conversation was lively and all involved seemed to enjoy the experience.

This year, we also began plans for an undergraduate math lounge. We are still in the planning stages, but hopefully we can get something going next year.
