Professional Plaudits
Professor Freydoon Shahidi was named a CMI Prize Fellow by Clay Mathematics Institute President Arthur Jaffe of Harvard University. In addition to the honor of the title, the fellowship provides two months of support during summer 2000. Shahidi was recommended for the award by Andrew Wiles, who proved Fermatıs Last Theorem, and who is also a CMI Fellow, on the basis of Shahidi's recent work in establishing new cases of the Langlands Functoriality Conjecture which has been out of reach up to now. The work is a culmination of a method that Shahidi has developed throughout his career at Purdue.
Three mathematics staff members were honored in September 1999 for their teaching excellence. Professors Johnny Brown and Justin Price were designated as Fellows of the Teaching Academy. Graduate student Anantha S. Sundararajan was selected as a new Associate of the Teaching Academy. The Purdue Teaching Academy is a network of scholar-teachers committed to the continual improvement of teaching and learning at Purdue.
Sai Kee Yeung was promoted from associate to full professor effective August 2000. Yeung received a Ph.D. from Columbia in 1989. His research area is differential geometry and complex manifolds.
