New Faces in the Department

Brooke Shipley Brooke Shipley joined the Mathematics faculty in August 1998 as Assistant Professor of Mathematics. She received a Ph.D. from MIT in 1995 and was the recipient of an NSF postdoctoral fellowship. She spent the following year at Notre Dame, where she worked with Professor William Dwyer. During 1996-97 and 1997-98, Shipley was a Dickson Instructor at the University of Chicago. Shipley's research area is topology and homotopy theory.
Four 1998 Ph.D. recipients joined the department
last August as Research Assistant Professors.
Eugene Belogay completed his Ph.D. at Georgia Tech under Yang Wang. Belogay's primary research area is applied analysis, with specializations in wavelet theory, combinatorics, algorithms, and digital imaging. Eugene Belogay
David Boyd received a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne. His thesis advisor was Aimo Hinkkanen. His research area is dynamical systems, in particular complex dynamics. David Boyd
Lei Ni earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California, Irvine, where his advisor was Peter Li. His research focuses on geometric analysis, complex geometry, and Riemmanian geometry. Lei Ni
Quan Shen completed his Ph.D. at Penn State under M. Carme Calderer. His research interests lie in the area of applied mathematics: mathematical modeling and simulation in material science; numerical solution of partial differential equations; numerical analysis and scientific computations. Meet our Webmaster

Michael Hilborn joined our staff in August as webmaster for the Mathematics and Statistics Departments. Michael earned a B.S. in biochemistry from Lafayette College in Easton, PA and received his M.S. in biological sciences from Purdue in 1998.

Michael's prior work experience includes serving as co-editor-in-chief of his college newspaper and working as a teaching assistant and research fellow while studying for his degree at Purdue. He acquired web experience as a web developer for the Purdue University/Biomedia Center and as a web developer for ArcticSoft in West Lafayette, where he designed and help implement web sites for local businesses.

Please check out Michael's handiwork on our newly redesigned web site:

While you're there, be sure to take a look at the web version of PUrview--in particular, the three most recent issues, which Michael has beautifully reformatted for the viewing pleasure of our alums and friends!
