Lecture in Memory of Leonard D. Berkovitz

09-14-2010

H.T. BanksH.T. Banks of North Carolina State University gave a lecture in memory of Leonard D. Berkovitz on Tuesday, October 26, 2010. His talk was entitled "Relaxed Controls, Differential Games, Preisach Hysteresis, and Mixing Distributions in Statistical Inverse Problems."

After earning a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Purdue in 1967 under the direction Leonard Berkovitz, Prof. Banks served 22 years in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University and then joined the faculty at University of Southern California, where he was the founder and first Director of the Center for Applied Mathematical Sciences. In January 1992, he accepted a position at North Carolina State University, where he is currently Distinguished University Professor, Drexel Professor of Mathematics, Director for the Center for Research in Scientific Computation, and Co-Director for the Center for Quantitative Sciences in Biomedicine. In 1994, he founded the NCSU Industrial Applied Mathematics Program.

Dr. Banks has published over 400 papers in applied mathematics and engineering journals, has graduated 35 Ph.D. students, has directed more than 36 postdocs, has written four books, and edited several others. He has been active in SIAM in various capacities over the course of his career. Between 1980 and 2000, he served as Editor for the Journal of Mathematical Biology, as well as on numerous national advisory panels. From 1980 to 2002, he served as Scientific Consultant to the Institute of Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) at NASA Langley Research Center and was named Associate Member of ICASE in 1985. During the past 20 years, he has received funding from ARO, AFOSR and NSF and served as a consultant to industrial research groups.

Prof. Banks is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He was the recipient of the 1996 IEEE-CSS Control Systems Technology Award, Purdue University Distinguished Alumni Award (1998), and the W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize in Applied Mathematics (2002).

---------------

Leonard Berkovitz joined the Purdue faculty as Professor of Mathematics in 1962. He was Head of the Mathematics Department from 1975 to 1980 and Acting Head in 1989-1990. He served on numerous curriculum and administrative committees, and he remained active in research and teaching until his retirement in 2002. Eleven students obtained Ph.D. degrees under his supervision. His research focused on differential games, optimal control theory, and nonclassical variational problems. He was the author of several textbooks and numerous scientific papers.
