Andrew Toms awarded 2011 AMS Centennial Fellowship

02-04-2011

Andrew S. TomsAndrew S. Toms, associate professor of mathematics, has been awarded an American Mathematical Society Centennial Research Fellowship. The AMS awarded just one Centennial Fellowship this year.

A Research Fellowship Fund was established by the AMS in 1973 to provide one-year fellowships for research in mathematics. In 1988 the Fellowship was renamed to honor the AMS Centennial. The number of fellowships granted each year depends on the contributions received; the Society supplements contributions as needed. The primary selection criterion for the Centennial Fellowship is the excellence of the candidate's research.

Toms came to Purdue in 2010 from York University (Canada). His previous appointments were assistant professor at the University of New Brunwick and NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at Copenhagen University/Fields Institute. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. Recently he was the recipient of two Canadian awards: the Canadian Mathematical Society's 2010 G. de B. Robinson Award, given by the Canadian Mathematical Society, and the Israel Halperin Prize for outstanding work in operator algebras or operator theory by members of the Canadian mathematical community.
