AMS, Lathisms marks Hispanic Heritage Month with scholar profiles

09-19-2016

September 15 to October 15 marks the observance of Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States.  In honor of that occasion the AMS twitter account @amermathsoc and the website Lathisms will be featuring a profile of a Latin@ or Hispanic mathematician every day during this 30-day observance.

This effort was announced in the October 2016 edition of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.  The authors cite the fact that while 17 percent of the American population is Hispanic, only 3.5 percent of 2014 PhDs in mathematics were Hispanic as an impetus for the project.   Role models from the same demographic are known to inspire young scholars to consider and stay in fields in which they are underrepresented.

On Monday, September 19 our own Rodrigo Bañuelos was profiled.
