GAANN plus VIGRE at Purdue

The VIGRE program has been discontinued. Although these webpages are still made available for historical interest, the information available should be considered out of date.

Concurrent with the VIGRE grant, the Mathematics Department received $813,700 over a period of three years as the recipient of a Department of Education GAANN grant (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need). The GAANN program is designed to increase participation by U.S. citizens and permanent residents in doctoral programs within certain disciplines designated as areas of national need by the DOE. Having both a GAANN and VIGRE program has had a synergistic effect on the math graduate program. The program has been greatly energized by these two awards and the number of domestic graduate students in the PhD program has greatly increased.

GAANN provides fellowship money for five years, the first three funded by the grant, and the last two years to be provided by other funds. In addition to a stipend, each fellow receives a large allowance to pay for school related expenses, including conference related travel. Fellows have four years without teaching duties and one year of quarter time supervised teaching. Fellows also participate in special seminars, summer programs, and other activities that increase the chance for successful completion of the PhD degree.
