Information for new account holders
Introduction and Changing Your Password
Your Department of Mathematics account allows you to access servers and websites within the department.
Upon receiving your new account, immediately change your password from the temporary password given to you. To do this you:
- log into MathNet with your username and temporary password
- select Password Change from the directory on the left hand side
- enter in a new password for your account that is both secure and memorable
If you need help selecting a secure password, ITaP's password guidelines website (intended for Purdue Career Accounts) has some information on how to create a secure, memorable password.
Along with your departmental account you also have a Purdue Career Account through ITaP. This account allows you to access several university-wide systems including computers in ITaP labs, MyPurdue, and Purdue Libraries resources, to name a few. You may have already activated this account through ITaP Account Setup before reaching campus. If you haven't yet activated this account you can do so through several methods which are detailed on ITAP's Purdue Career Account website.
Both your Department of Mathematics account and your Purdue Career Account have e-mail capabilities and you now have two new e-mail addresses, username@math.purdue.edu and username@purdue.edu, where username is your login alias.
Important note: E-mail sent to your @math.purdue.edu account may contain vital and time-sensitive information it is important that you read your e-mail regularly. If you want to read your @math.purdue.edu e-mail from any other address then you need to follow the directions below on creating a .forward file.
In most cases your login alias is the same for both your @math.purdue.edu and @purdue.edu accounts. However, occasionally your Purdue Career Account alias is different. To verify your Purdue Career Account alias you can visit ITaP's alias lookup and password reset page.
You can choose to receive mail at both accounts, forward one account into another, or forward mail from both accounts into a third party account. Your @purdue.edu account (Purdue Career Account) can also reject e-mail, however we do not recommend you choose this option as you may fail to receive important mailings with this setting.
A note about forwarding your mail
You must be careful to only forward your mail one way to avoid creating a loop. Either forward your MATH mail to your @purdue account OR your @purdue mail to your MATH account. Alternatively, you can forward both accounts to a third account from which you read and send e-mail.
