Philosophy and Practices
This page contains some of my thoughts on pedagogy in academia, with a focus on mathematical courses. Other contents of this portfolio are archives for webpages of past courses taught, selected samples from these courses, and formal and informal course evaluations.
My general thoughts on teaching are as follows:
- One should continuously practice reflective teaching and amend teaching styles to fit the audience
- Telling a story is an important ingredient in mathematics courses: these courses are often abstract and a lack of narrative can sour the experience for students
- An instructor should constantly motivate the material and results: being a technical discipline, there is often a very lucid and logical progression of arguments in a mathematics course. This is not communicated by merely teaching mechanics.
