E-mails to Bell's MA 161 ---------------------------- August 19 Greetings and welcome to MA 161! This is to let you know that you can always view my lectures on MWF 12:30-1:20 pm during or after the time they are given by logging onto Blackboard and clicking on the Boilercast link there. Please note that your Tuesday, Thursday recitations are NOT online. You will need to go to a physical place at a prescribed time to participate in this important part of the course. Find more info about the course at www.math.purdue.edu/MA161 Happy new semester! -Steve Bell ---------------------------- August 22 Dear MA 16100, Oh blast! I pushed the wrong button in class today and the video of my lecture failed to show up in the Boilercast. This should be a one time only mistake. But not to worry. Go to http://www.math.purdue.edu/~bell/MA161/Lectures/ to see two links about the lecture for Lesson 1. Click on Lecture on 08-22 on Lesson 1 to see what I wrote on the big screen. Click on the audio link in another window to hear what I was saying while I wrote. If you look at the writing while the audio runs in the background, it should almost be like being there. Below are instructions about how to view the videos in the future. Sorry about that! -Steve Bell ------------------ How to Access Recorded Lectures 1. Go to Blackboard Learn https://mycourses.purdue.edu/ and log in with your Purdue Career Account. 2. Click on Fall-2016-MA-16100-xxx (near the middle of the page, under “My Courses”). 3. Click on BoilerCast (left side column of the page) IMPORTANT: Turn off pop-up blocker or allow pop-ups for mycourses.purdue.edu 4. Click on Lecture Recordings (ALP) Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the registration (this part only needs to be done once). ------------------ August 24 Dear MA 161 911 section, The boilercast of today's lecture is hung up someplace. I have been assured by ItaP that it will appear on Blackboard soon. In the meantime, you can see the notes from today's lecture in the usual place by clicking on the aftermath at www.math.purdue.edu/~bell/MA161 By the way, the CCI quiz in recitation on Thursday is for 2 points of extra credit, so don't get worried about it. (If you take it, you get 2 points.) I hope everybody has gotten onto WebAssign ok. If you have had problems, this might help: One very common problem students have with WebAssign is that they try to log in from WebAssign's main page instead of Purdue's portal. Most of those problems can be resolved by following this procedure: --------------------------------- 1) Log out from WebAssign, completely close and reopen the browser. 2) Go to http://www.webassign.net/purdue/login.html 3) Click on the red button "LOG IN @ PURDUE UNIVERSITY" in the middle of the screen (DO NOT click on the red "LOG IN" button in the upper right corner) 4) This will take you to a Purdue server, where you enter your purdue career username and password. You should then be taken into a correct account in WebAssign, where you should see your classes. --------------------------------- Once we get the kinks worked out, things will look much brighter for MA 161! -Steve Bell ------------------ August 30 Dear MA 161, That survey you got an e-mail about is for real. You will get 2 extra credit points in MA 161 if you complete it. -Steve Bell ------------------ September 8 Dear MA 161, I have started a Piazza page for my MA 161 class. It is a place where students can talk to each other about the homework after hours. You will get an email from Piazza.com inviting you to enroll. Use your Purdue email address to create an account. Piazza is a good thing and you'll very likely be using it in other courses too. On another matter, the statement that Lim f(x) = infinity x -> a has a definite meaning. It means that f(x) can be made arbitrarily large by taking x sufficiently close to a (x not equal to a). However, if that limit is infinity and the question is, "Does the limit exist?", the answer would be "no." We only say the limit EXISTS if the limit is a FINITE real number. Some of the homework expects you to put plus or minus infinity in the boxes where it makes sense to rather than DNE. -Steve Bell ------------------ Dear MA 161, Exam 1 is on Thursday, Sept. 22 8:00-9:00 pm at various locations on campus.
