Temam Status: In ``Studies in Advanced Mathematics'', vol. 3, 363--376, AMS and International Press, 1997 Abstract: A nonlinear Galerkin method using Legendre polynomials is presented for solving linear elliptic and nonlinear dissipative evolution equations. The essential idea is to decompose the approximation space into a long-wavelength part and a short-wavelength part which are mutually orthogonal with respect to the principal elliptic operator of the equation.
