abstract:

Initial-boundary-value problems for nonlinear wave equations have
received less attention than have the associated pure initial-value
problems.  On the other hand, they are often the most natural
formulation in practical applications.  It is our purpose to explain
why such problems are of interest, so indicate some recent theoretical
advances and to conclude with applications to problems arising in
coastal engineering.
