Title: Variational Mesh Adaptation Speaker: Weizhang Huang, Department of Mathematics, University of Kansas Abstract: Mesh adaptation has become an indispensable tool in the numerical solution of partial differential equations. With the variational approach, mesh adaptation is viewed as a continuous process and adaptive meshes are generated through a coordinate transformation determined as the minimizer of an adaptation functional. In this talk, a new variational method will be presented. The two critical issues in mesh generation, mesh quality and concentration, are taken into account in the development of the method. Topics such as the measures of mesh geometry and adaptation, the choice of the monitor function, and error analysis, will also be addressed.
