No notes or books will be allowed during exams. Only simple scientific, nongraphic calculators are allowed.
Homework will be collected at designated times in class. Several problems will be graded from each assignment, and points more will also be given for 'completeness'.
Each Tuesday class will meet in Recitation. There, homework will be returned, the class will discuss the week's homework, and there will be a quiz. EACH QUIZ WILL CONSIST OF TWO PARTS AND BE WORTH 10 POINTS. At the end of the semester, the homework and the quizzes, will be graded and blended to give 100 points.
Altogether the course has a basis of 500 points:
There will be two hourlong class exams worth 100 points each, together giving 200 points.
There will be a 2 hour final worth 200 points.
There will be 100 points from a joint homework-quiz recitation score described above.
We take homework seriously. Homework will be given with a due date, and late homework will not be acceptable except under extreme circumstances. To assist timely return of homework, we will put aside the first 10 or 15 minutes of each period for student questions about homework.
I feel that it is necessary for students to stay current in homework, rather than to 'catch up' from time to time,
because the material we will be covering in class will become more and more complicated.
Homework is part of the learning process.
If a student falls behind, the daily class material will become less and less understandable, because it builds on
the abilities one is supposed to have developed doing homework.
