Cover and Foreword

The Early Years

            1920 -- 1932. My pre-teen years as the oldest of three sons in a lower socio-economic family. Some vignettes of what life was like in the 1920s.

The Teen Years

            1932 -- Fall, 1941. We moved from a lower socio-economic class family to one even lower. Vignettes of what life was like in the Great Depression. How we dealt with annual flooding. I remember a few friends. I get my first job.

Twenty One Plus

            Fall, 1941 -- June, 1944. I meet Louella Myers Peterson. The Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. Lou and I marry. Our State-side Army experiences.

Action in Northern Europe

            June, 1944 -- October,1945. The title pretty much tells it all. Our oldest son, Dick, is born and is 16 months old before I see him.

Getting on with Life

            October, 1945 -- August, 1949. I enter Butler University and go back to work for the Indianapolis News. I finish the B.S. in 2 years and 8 months. I teach for a year at Butler. Ted is born and we move to West Lafayette and Purdue University.

MS to Ph.D. via NOPI

            September, 1949 -- August, 1957. I finish the M.S. degree and take a job at the U.S. Naval Ordnance Plant, Indianapolis. The Korean War ends and I return to Purdue for my Ph.D.

Professional Life Starts

            September, 1949 -- August, 1957. Declining offers from other universities, I accept a job as Assistant Professor and Assistant to the Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Purdue. I'm named Head of the Department, but resign as part of a ``Revolution." New Leadership comes, but I'm asked to remain in the administrative structure.

From Here To     .     .     .

            August, 1964 -- June 30, 1991. My first and only Sabbatical Leave, I return as Associate Dean of Science, but also spend years as coordinator of the Mathematics Departments's Calculus Committee. I introduce Computer Oreiented Calculus and write a small book on FORTRAN for such courses. I serve three terms of the University Senate, during one of which I chair the revision of the University Calendar. Other professional and community activities.

Life with Lou, Dick, Ted and Jim

            August, 1957 -- ??. Family adventures and travels. Jim is born in 1961. I have four hip replacemenst, a bypass and a new aortic valve.

Our Foreign Travels

            1983 -- 2005 This Chapter separates our trips abroad from our home life.

My Life in the Air

            November, 1966 -- June, 1984. I realize my lifelong interest in flying. Earn both a pilot's license and an Instrument Rating. Many adventures in the air.

My Life on the Road

            September, 1978 -- July, 1982. My revolutionary activities in the 60's get me the job of investigating similar at Purdue's campus near Michigan City, Indiana. Turns out to be an interesting and challenging period.

Other Adventures

            January, 1971 -- ??. The Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, the Lafayette Rotary Club and the Partners of the Americas give me contacts with the Community and the Hemisphere.

Action in Northern Europe - 60 Years Later

            October 1-15, 2005. With my oldest son, Dick, I revisited a number WWII sites.
