Syllabus: Schedule and assignments

Blackboard: We will use Blackboard Learn (not vista) to record grades and for submission of off-campus homework. To access Blackboard Learn, log in here using your Purdue career account user name and password. Use the tabs along the left to navigate: check announcements, assignments, and grades, and communicate with others in the class. For off-campus students, submit homework by clicking on Assignments, then clicking on the appropriate assignment. Click Browse My Computer to upload a pdf file of your work, and then click 'Submit'.

Important: In the event of a major campus emergency, course requirements, deadlines, and grading percentages are subject to changes that may be necessitated by a revised semester calendar or other circumstances beyond the instructor's control. Information about such changes will be posted on this web page and/or via email.

Overview: In this class we'll study several of the major areas of mathematics that are useful in engineering, including linear algebra and methods of analysis and solution for ordinary and partial differential equations.

Grading:Course grading will be based on 2 midterms (10/3 Wednesday and 11/7 Wednesday in class), a final, and regular homework. The distribution will be roughly 20% per midterm, 40% for the final, and 20% for the homework. The lowest three homework scores will be dropped, but in return, late homework will not be accepted. Notes, books, and calculators are NOT allowed during midterm and final exams.

The course topics will include the following.

Chapter 7: Linear Algebra: Basics
Chapter 8: Linear Algebra: Eigenvalue Problems
Chapter 4: Systems of ODEs
Chapter 6: Laplace Transforms
Chapter 11: Fourier Analysis
Chapter 12: Partial Differential Equations
