Luca Capogna received a Sloan Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship for the 1995-96 academic year. His dissertation deals with optimal regularity in the horizontal gradient for solutions to second order nonlinear equations in stratified, nilpotent Lie groups. Using a new approach, Capogna has succeeded in proving the conjectured optimal smoothness in the lower dimensional cases and has made substantial progress in the higher dimensional cases. Capogna's thesis supervisor is Professor Nicola Garofalo.

Anthony Thomas (PhD94) received a 1994-95 Excellence in Professional Development/Research Award from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where he is currently an assistant professor. Since joining the UWP faculty in 1994, two of Thomas' grant applications have been funded, and he has participated in five partially-funded workshops during 1995. He presented research papers at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Burlington and San Francisco and has given talks at UW-La Crosse and the University of Chicago.

Daoqi Yang (PhD95) received a Leslie Fox Prize for his contribution to numerical analysis, presented at the Leslie Fox Prize Meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland on June 26, 1995.
