1996 Distinguished Math Alumnus

Joseph Jerome, Professor of Applied Mathematics at Northwestern University, was one of eight Distinguished Alumni honored by the School of Science at a banquet on April 19.

Jerome received an M.S. degree in 1963 and a Ph.D. in 1966 under Michael Golomb. Author of approximately 97 publications, he has held visiting positions at Oxford, the University of Texas, Bell Labs, and the University of Chicago. He was a Graduate Fellow of the National Science Foundation and a Fellow of the British Science Council.

Jerome has made an important contribution to serveral areas of applied mathematics. His current research stresses constructive aspects of nonlinear analysis associated with VLSI, and the associated algorithms. Also under study are ionic channels, which constitute another example of charge transport. The latter research includes a visiting appointment at Rush Medical College in Chicago.
