Sir John Ball to present a Distinguished Lecture Series talk

The Center for Computational & Applied Mathematics is proud to announce that Sir John Ball, Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Oxford will give a talk on Monday, April 3 at 4:30 pm in LWSN 1142  as a part of the Distinguished Lecture Series. His talk is entitled "Some recent mathematical developments in liquid crystals"

Sir John Macleod Ball, FRS FRSE, is Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Oxford. He was the President of the International Mathematical Union from 2003–06 and a Fellow of Queen’s College, Oxford. Born in 1948, he was educated at the University of Cambridge and Sussex University. Prior to taking up his Oxford post, he was a professor of mathematics at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

Professor Ball’s research interests include elasticity, the calculus of variations, and infinite-dimensional dynamical systems. He was  knighted in the New Year Honours list for 2006 “for services to Science.” He is a Fellow of Royal Society (FRS), member of the  Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
