Telnetting to math from a PUCC PC

First, you must gain access to the PC by loging on with your Purdue Career Account login ID and password. (see logging onto a PUCC PC).

After a few seconds, the Win95 desktop will appear. Click on the word START with the left mouse button (in the upper left corner of the screen) to expose a menu. Choose

/Standard Software/Telecommunications/Telnets/

and then highlight any host on the last menu.

When the dialogue box pops up, type

banach.math.purdue.edu

in the Host and click on OK.

The dialogue box should go away and now you can logon to banach in the black window as usual. You can do lots of UNIX things in this window, including e-mail using elm or pine, etc., and editing files using vi or pico. However, you cannot do things like xdvi, xv, xfig, netscape, xmaple, or get matlab graphics that spawn special windows. To do these things, you will need to start an xterm on the PC as described in the next section, getting a math xterm on a PUCC PC.

If the itty bitty font in your telnet window starts to bother you, do this. Click on SETTINGS and choose FONT. Choose COURIER and REGULAR and then click on 12. Then grab the bottom right corner of the telnet window by left-mouse clicking on it and dragging it to make the window bigger. That should make the font get bigger too.

You are now ready to move on to the next section, getting a math xterm on a PUCC PC.
