My research is focused in the following areas:

 

  1. (a)Student and teacher symbol sense when interacting with mathematical statements in high school or college mathematics courses,


  1. (b)Use of technology for working with symbolic expressions in mathematics,


  1. (c)Students' and teachers' anticipatory and reflective practices in learning and teaching mathematics.



Recent research and grant activities include:


  1. -Work with colleagues in Industrial Engineering and Mathematics on “The POET Project” - An NSF TUES grant focused on the development of web-based learning tools for engineering students to build their understanding and reasoning about mathematical models in linear programming;


  1. -Work with a colleague in English Education to investigate pre-service mathematics teachers use of writing to learn mathematics.  This work was supported by a Purdue research fellowship with the Discovery Learning Research Center

  2. -

  3. -A university partnership with the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township in Indianapolis on two Math-Science Partnership Grants aimed at algebra readiness in middle schools.
