New Faculty and Staff

Andrei Gabrieov Andrei Gabrielov was appointed Professor of Mathematics and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in August. He was educated at the I.M. Gelfand school of analysis at Moscow State University, where he received a Ph.D. in 1973. Unable to find an appropriate academic position in Russia in the 1970's, Gabrielov accepted a position at the International Institute of Earthquake Prediction and Mathematical Geophysics in Moscow. This led to his dual career as mathematician and geophysicist. During 1994-95, he was the primary visiting scientist to the ACSyAM branch of the Cornell Mathematical Sciences Institute (MSI). Gabrielov is the author of about 60 papers, approximately half in mathematics and half in geophysics. His presence at Purdue adds a new and valuable interdisciplinary component to the Departments of Mathematics and E&AS.

Kenji Matsuki Kenji Matsuki has joined the department this fall as Associate Professor of Mathematics. Matsuki received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Tokyo University. After completing his Ph.D. at Columbia in 1988, he was appointed Assistant Professor at Brandeis. During Fall 1992, he was a visiting assistant professor at the University of Utah. Matsuki's research has focused on the minimal models program, also known as "Mori Theory," for 3-folds and higher-dimensional algebraic varieties. He has been a Fujukai Foundation Fellow, a Japanese Mathematical Scientists Graduate Fellow, and was the recipient of an Alfred P. Sloan Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship.

Devilyna Nichols Devilyna Nichols joined the department in August as Coordinator of Elementary Service Courses. Nichols received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Purdue and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Kappa Delta Pi. She has taught mathematics at both the high school and college levels, and for the past three years has been employed as an academic advisor for mathematics, statistics, and biology undergraduates at Purdue. Nichols has worked extensively with the Calculus, Concepts, Computers, and Cooperative Learning project since its inception at Purdue, with all research directed in the area of mathematics education at the undergraduate level.
