News From the Actuarial Science Program

The Actuarial Science Program is in an exciting period of development and growth, and 1995-96 has been a good year in a variety of ways. With fifteen companies recruiting on campus and as many more sending notices of job openings, it is clear that companies are noticing the strength of our students. This May, 18 students are finishing their actuarial studies, and all the graduates who are well qualified by industry standards (a high GPA and two or more actuarial exams) have found very good positions. Moreover, a substantial number of underclass students have found actuarial internships for the summer that will enable them to gain experience and help them determine whether they have chosen the right career.

Our goals for the program for the next few years include getting more people involved, both students and faculty. As part of this effort, it is a pleasure to announce that Professor Philip Protter was appointed Associate Director this spring. Next fall, we will begin a recruiting effort to let potential students know the value of a math/business background in general and of the actuarial career in particular. If you know of future Boilermakers who are thinking about math careers, please tell them about us: almost all of our students found out about actuarial careers from an individual contact that they remember.

More information about the program can be found at the web site:

If you are active in or interested in an actuarial area or, more generally, in any business career where math has been pivotal, let us hear from you!
