Textbook and Requirements

The textbook for the course is Differential Equations and Linear Algebra (4th Edition) by Stephen Goode and Scott Annin. You may use an older edition if it is easier to obtain. There may be some differences in pages, section numbers and questions.

You will need a zoom account to attend the lectures and a working webcam to take the exams.

Course Description

MATH 165 is an introductory course on linear algebra and differential equations. The course begins with the basics of differential equations, after which it pivots to linear algebra, which includes matrix algebra, solving systems of linear equations, determinants and the basics of abstract vector spaces. After that, we will return to differential equations and use techniques from linear algebra to qualitatively and quantitatively understand the solution space of differential equations.

Topics include matrix algebra and inverses; Gaussian elimination and solving systems of linear equations; determinants; vector spaces; linear independence; bases; dimension; eigenvalue problems; first order differential equations including separable equations and linear equations; linear \(n\)th order differential equations with constant coefficients, undetermined coefficients; and first order linear homogenous systems of differential equations.

Please go through the links in the sidebar for more information.

Prerequisites

Any student who wishes to take this course should be familiar with the basics of integration and differentiation as covered in the first year of the calculus sequences (140s, 160s, 170s). In particular, one of MATH 143, MATH 162, MATH 172, or equivalent is mandatory.

A student taking this course may benefit from having taken MATH 164. However, despite the numbering MATH 164 is NOT a formal prerequisite for MATH 165, and students can choose to take the two in either order (or even simultaneously).
