Math 510: Vector Calculus

Course Information

Professor: Kiril Datchev
Email: kdatchev@purdue.edu
Lectures: Until March 13th, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 10:30 to 11:20, in REC 123. Starting March 23rd, use the materials below.
Office hours: Until March 13th, after class, or by appointment, in MATH 602. Starting March 23rd, use email and telephone.

Textbook: Vector Calculus (5th or 6th Edition), by Jerrold E. Marsden and Anthony Tromba, on reserve in the math library. This is a good book but too expensive. I recommend a used copy for $10. The two editions are virtually identical and I won't be using the book to assign homework. We will cover most of the material in the book: the geometry of Euclidean space, differentiation of functions of several real variables, higher-order derivatives, maxima and minima, vector-valued functions and their derivatives, double and triple integrals, change of variables, integrals over curves and surfaces, and the integral theorems of vector analysis. Another good book is Calculus of Several Variables by Robert T. Seeley.

Grading is based on

  • almost weekly homework, worth 20% of the total grade,
  • two midterms, the first in class on 2/19 and the second take-home on 4/1, worth 20% of the total grade each,
  • a take-home final exam, during finals week (see below), worth 40% of the total grade.
  • Homework assignments until Homework 7 are due in class on Wednesdays, or in MATH 602 by 12:30 pm. Starting with Homework 8 they are due by email on Wednesdays, by 12:30pm. They may be handed in up to one week late for half credit. Collaboration is encouraged, but you must write up your homework on your own. Here are the assignments:

    Homework 1, due January 22nd.
    Homework 2, due January 29th.
    Homework 3, due Feburary 5th.
    Homework 4, due Feburary 12th.
The first midterm will be on February 19th. There is no homework due but take a look at the following midterm review problems.
    Homework 5, due Feburary 26th.
    Homework 6, due March 4th.
    Homework 7, due March 11th.
    Homework 8, due March 25th.
The second midterm will be distributed April 1st and due April 2nd. There is no homework due that week but take a look at the following midterm review problems.
    Homework 9, due April 8th.
    Homework 10, due April 15th.
    Homework 11, due April 22nd.
    Homework 12, due April 29th.
    Final review problems.

    Online Course Materials

The course is online starting March 23rd. Please submit homework and exams by email by 12:30pm on the due date. Lecture notes will be posted here before the beginning of each regular class time. I will be available over email or by telephone in real time during class time and office hours to answer questions and give more information as needed. I will also be available over email at other times as usual.
