Course Information

Professor: Kiril Datchev
Email: kdatchev@purdue.edu
Section 11 Lectures: Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:00 to 1:15 pm, in UNIV 103.
Section 21 Lectures: Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:30 to 2:45 pm, in UNIV 103.
Office hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:50 to 3:20 pm, Wednesdays 3:30 to 4:30 pm, or by appointment, in MATH 602.

Textbook: Vector Calculus (6th Edition), by Jerrold E. Marsden and Anthony Tromba, on reserve in the math library. An older edition will also work, as I won't be using the book to assign homework problems. We will cover most of the material in the book: the geometry of Euclidean space in all dimensions, differentiation of functions of several real variables, higher-order derivatives, maxima and minima, vector-valued functions and their derivatives, double and triple integrals, change of variables, integrals over curves and surfaces, and the integral theorems of vector analysis. Later on, we will use Donu Arapura's online notes on differential forms.

Grading is based on

  • Weekly homework assignments, worth 15% of the total grade,
  • Midterm I, on Monday, February 6th, from 8:00 to 9:30 pm, in CL50 224, worth 25% of the total grade,
  • Midterm II, on Monday, April 3rd, from 8:00 to 9:30 pm, in MTHW 210, worth 25% of the total grade,
  • A Final Exam, on Friday, May 5th, from 8:00 to 10:00 am, in ME 1061, worth 35% of the total grade.
