Undergraduate Graders and Proctors

The Department of Mathematics hires undergraduate graders to assist with grading in MA 15300, 15800, 16010, 16020, 26500, and 26600, as well as with proctoring needs within the department. Graders are usually offered an assignment of 4–10 working hours per week. The starting pay rate is $12.50 per hour. This is an hourly position and does not qualify for tuition remission.

Job description

Undergraduate graders are assigned to grade homework assignments and/or quizzes for MA 15300, 15800, 16010, 16020, 26500, and 26600. The exact duties will be described to graders by the instructors of the assigned course sections. Graders must keep accurate records of students' scores throughout the semester. Undergraduate graders are typically hired to work 4–10 hours every week. Most are offered 8-hour assignments. 

Graders may also be asked to work as exam proctors. Proctoring hours are optional and subject to the grader's own availability.  

Qualification

Undergraduate grader positions are reserved for students with strong mathematical background. Successful candidates will be students who have high grades, have good organizational skills, and are dependable. 

Pay rates

This position pays $12.50 per hour for first-time graders to the Department of Mathematics, $13.00 per hour for graders who are returning for their second or third semester, and $13.50 per hour for all graders returning for their fourth semester and beyond.

Q: I applied to be a grader in the past. Can I use my old application? 
A:
No. You must submit a new application for the upcoming semester. 

Q: Do I need to submit my transcript for the application? 
A:
 You will indicate the courses you have taken at Purdue in the application. But we do not need you to submit your transcript with the application. Please do not send us personal appeals or transcripts. 

Q: When will I know whether I am hired or not? 
A:
 You will be contacted by the Friday before first day of class, informing you whether you are hired or not. For the Fall 2026 semester, this falls on August 21. 

Q: My information has changed since I submitted my application. Can I update my application? 
A:
 Yes! You may access your application through your Purdue Office 365 account and make edits any time before the application deadline. You may also click the application link at the top of this page to retrieve your application. 

Q: I will be on leave next semester. Can I work remotely for this job? 
A:
 No. This is an on-campus employment which may require in-person communication with instructors. If you are studying abroad, at an internship, or on medical leave, we kindly ask you to consider the grader position in a future semester. 

Q: I missed the deadline by a day. Can I still apply? 
A:
 No. We do not accept late applications. 

Q: If I receive an offer, may I defer it to the following semester? 
A:
 No. You will need to submit a new application for the following semester. 

Q: I am an international student. Am I eligible for this position? 
A:
If your visa status allows for on-campus employments, you are most likely eligible. For a more definitive answer tailored to your specific situation, contact the Office of International Students and Scholars

Q: This will be my first employment on campus. What kind of paperwork do I need to complete? 
A:
 If you are offered the position, we will send your information to Payroll, and they will provide the details about necessary paperwork. For more details, contact College of Science Payroll (cospayroll@purdue.edu). 

Q: I was a grader for MA 13700/13800/13900. Do you not hire graders for these courses any more?
A: We still do! Please contact Prof Brooke Max (bmax@purdue.edu) if you are interested in grading for MA 13700/13800/13900. We ask you not to submit the application above if these are the only courses for which you are interested in grading. 

Q: I am interested in grading for courses not listed here. How do I proceed? 
A:
This application is only for graders of MA 15300, 15800, 16010, 16020, 26500, and 26600. Please contact the instructors if you are interested in grading for other courses. 

Q: What are the criteria used in your grader selection process? 
A:
 The selection process is mostly based on (1) the grades you earned in the courses for which we need graders, and (2) whether you have graded for us before, and if so, evaluation from instructors.  

Q: Do you hire graders and proctors for the summer? 
A: No. The Department of Mathematics does not hire undergraduate graders and proctors for summer employment.
