Professor Xiangxiong Zhang ranked among world’s top 2% of scientists
10-13-2025

Purdue University’s Xiangxiong Zhang, professor of mathematics, has been recognized on the 2025 Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists list, ranking 88th among 16,972 researchers in the subfield of numerical and computational mathematics based on citation data from 2024.
The annual list identifies the top 2% of scientists worldwide across all disciplines, using standardized citation metrics to highlight long-term research impact. The 2025 edition introduces a new searchable database, TopSciNet, allowing users to explore profiles of the scientists included.
Zhang’s research focuses on developing advanced numerical methods for solving complex mathematical models, work that contributes to applications across science and engineering. His inclusion on the list marks the fifth time he has received this recognition.
“Being named among the top 2% of scientists for the fifth time—and with an improved ranking this year—is both humbling and inspiring,” Zhang said. “It underscores the long-term value of our research in developing robust numerical methods for solving challenging mathematical models. I’m deeply grateful for the strong research community within Purdue Mathematics and the Center for Computational and Applied Mathematics, which continues to provide the resources and collaboration essential for innovation.”
Zhang joined Purdue’s Department of Mathematics in 2011 and is affiliated with the Center for Computational and Applied Mathematics. His work continues to strengthen Purdue’s leadership in computational mathematics and interdisciplinary research that drives discovery and innovation.
