For James West, the path to a successful actuarial career didn’t begin with a clear plan. It began with uncertainty and a willingness to take a chance on something new.

Today, that decision has come full circle. West, a graduate of Purdue University’s actuarial science program, is being recognized with the College of Science’s Distinguished Science Alumni Award, honoring both his professional achievements and his lasting connection to the university.

West described the recognition as unexpected.

“It blew me away,” he said. “I never would have expected something like that. It’s such an honor.”

Finding direction at Purdue
West arrived at Purdue as a transfer student still exploring his options after initially considering a career in medicine, law, or economics. Encouraged by an advisor and an early introduction to actuarial science, he chose a path that combined mathematics, problem-solving and real-world application

Purdue stood out immediately.

“I was really impressed with the information they gave me and how they handled the process,” he said. “It just felt like the right place.”

As a nontraditional student, West entered campus life differently than many of his peers, but he quickly found his footing. Challenging coursework in areas like computer science and differential equations pushed him academically, while actuarial science courses helped solidify his career direction.

Beyond academics, Purdue broadened his perspective. Growing up in a small town in southwestern Indiana, West said the university introduced him to a more diverse and global community- an experience that built both confidence and adaptability.

“That exposure gave me a lot of confidence,” he said. “It showed me I could succeed in a much bigger environment.”

Launching a career in a changing industry
West graduated in December 2000 and soon began his career with Conseco, now CNO Financial Group. He entered the workforce during a period of significant change, gaining early experience in financial reporting, forecasting and corporate operations.

When the company filed for bankruptcy- one of the largest corporate bankruptcies at the time- West found himself navigating complex financial challenges early in his career. The experience, while difficult, accelerated his growth.

That foundation proved critical when he later joined American International Group in 2007. During the global financial crisis, West transitioned from technical actuarial work into strategic leadership, collaborating with senior executives to guide business decisions during a period of uncertainty.

Building something new
West eventually played a key role in launching Fortitude Re, where he now serves in a leadership position. The company was created from a collection of legacy insurance businesses and has grown rapidly into a major player in the reinsurance space.

Starting with a small team, West helped scale the organization into a global operation managing tens of billions in assets. Along the way, he led large-scale transactions, built financial infrastructure and helped guide the company through challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic.

But for West, the most meaningful accomplishment has been building the team itself.

“To go out and find great people, put them in positions where they can thrive and watch their careers grow — that’s been the most rewarding part,” he said.

A commitment to mentorship
Throughout his career, West has prioritized mentorship, shaped by leaders who guided him early on. He now works to create opportunities for others, including promoting actuarial training programs and supporting strong ties with Purdue through recruiting and internships.

His approach to leadership centers on empowering others. That philosophy has strengthened Fortitude Re’s connection to Purdue, where the company has become a frequent recruiter of actuarial students and interns.

A lasting Purdue connection
Despite decades in the industry, West’s connection to Purdue remains strong. He continues to follow the university closely and takes pride in giving back to the program that helped shape his career.

That connection now extends to the next generation- his son is preparing to attend a Purdue summer program, continuing the family’s ties to the university.

As West reflects on his journey, he credits Purdue with providing more than just technical skills. It offered confidence, opportunity and a foundation for long-term success.

Receiving the Distinguished Science Alumni Award, he said, is both humbling and meaningful.

“It means a lot to be recognized by a place that’s meant so much to me.”
