Andrew Toms, associate professor of mathematics, received the Israel Halperin Prize for outstanding contributions to the classification program of amenable C*-algebras. The award was made at the 38th annual Canadian Operator Algebra Symposium, held at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton in June 2010.
The Israel Halperin Prize is awarded every five years for outstanding work in operator algebras or operator theory to members of the Canadian mathematical community who are within ten years of receipt of their doctorate. Previous winners were Guihua Gong and Alexandru Nica (2000), Nigel Higson (1995), Ian Putnam (1990), Kenneth Davidson and David Handelman (1985), and Man-Duen Choi (1980).
