Bell receives Provost's Graduate Mentor Award

Steve BellProfessor Steve Bell has been selected as one of two recipients of the 2011 Provost's Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentor, presented by the Graduate School.

A member of the Purdue Teaching Academy, Bell is an innovative, award winning undergraduate teacher and a popular one at the graduate level. Over the years, he has developed numerous programs to aid students of all levels. Fourteen Ph.D. students have completed their degrees under his direction. He has served terms on the Graduate Committee of the Mathematics Department since 1987, chaired the committee 1998-2001, and is now three years into his second term as Chair. During his first term as Grad Chair, Bell was instrumental in designing and running the department's NSF VIGRE program. Both times during Bell's service as Mathematics Graduate Chair, it has fallen on him to revise the written math Ph.D. qualifier exam system.

Bell has played a role in graduate education at the levels of the College of Science and the University. He served six years on the CoS Faculty Council, and he has been on the Graduate Educational Curriculum Committee (GEPCC) of the College of Science since it was founded during his first term on the Council. He served as the Chair of the GEPCC in 2010. At the university level, Bell is now in the third year of a three-year term on the University Graduate Council and has been chosen to chair two of the Graduate School Dean's special task forces.
