Svitlana Mayboroda is the recipient of a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The award is considered one of the most prestigious for promising researchers in science and engineering.
Mayboroda will use the $410,000 grant to study partial different equations in non-smooth media. More specifically, the project is focused on the impact of irregular geometry and internal medium inhomogeneity on the behavior of solutions to fundamental elliptic boundary value problems. The scope of the proposed work incorporates a full range of sharp well-posedness and regularity results, asymptotic formulas, introduction and analysis of new measures, capacities and new function spaces, numerical experiment, localization phenomena.
Mayboroda earned her Ph.D. at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2005. Prior to joining the Purdue mathematics faculty in 2008, she held visiting faculty appointments at the Australian National University, Ohio State University, and Brown University. Her research interests lie at the interface of harmonic analysis and partial differential equations, centering around elliptic boundary value problems with particular emphasis on the setting of domains in Euclidean spaces whose boundaries are non-smooth. This is an area of analysis with a long and rich history and in which many fundamental questions remain wide open.
Mayboroda is a 2010 Sloan Research Fellow.
