Math faculty members Birgit Kaufmann and Jianlin Xia are recipients of 2013 NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Awards.

CAREER awards are the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations. The award amount is typically a minimum of $400,000 for a period of 5 years.

Kaufmann received funding for a project entitled "Physical properties of new materials via mathematics — methods and applications." Xia's project is entitled "Structured Matrix Computations: Foundations, Methods, and Applications."
