Purdue VIGRE Credits

The VIGRE program has been discontinued. Although these webpages are still made available for historical interest, the information available should be considered out of date.

The creation of the Purdue joint Math/Stat NSF VIGRE proposal was co-piloted by Carl Cowen, then Head of the Math Department, and Mary Ellen Bock, Head of the Statistics Department. A feature that is unique to the Purdue program is the cross fertilization between mathematics and statistics and the ease of connecting graduate students and postdocs to inderdisciplinary topics that such a coalition brings. Mary Ellen Bock also organizes and runs the VIGRE Liftoff Seminar in the fall semesters.

David Drasin chaired the VIGRE Committee charged with overseeing the program during its first two years. He also ran the Summer REU programs in 2001 and 2002 with characteristic gusto and came up with the idea of holding the joint REU day with neighboring universities at the end of each summer.

David Drasin also coauthered our GAANN proposal with David Goldberg (pictured below), and together, they ran the GAANN seminar.

Graduate Chairs

The Graduate Chairs have been deeply involved with recruiting graduate students and making the changes in the graduate program that the VIGRE grant has made possible.

Other members of the Graduate Committee:

1998-2001
L. Lempert, A. Sa Barreto, W. Heinzer, J. Smith, J. S. P. Wang, S. K. Yeung

2001-2002

Award winning teachers, Carl Cowen, David Moore, and J. J. Price, organized and ran the Brown Bag Lunchtime Teaching Seminar 2000-2001 to foster creative and innovative techniques for the teaching of college mathematics.

The Math/Stat VIGRE Committee 2000-2002

David Drasin and Steve Bell (all pictured higher above) also served on the committee. David Drasin chaired the committe 2000-2001. Steve Bell will chair it beginning Fall 2002.
